What Does the Verified Law Firm Badge Actually Mean?

4 min read

Anyone can build a website that looks like a law firm. The Verified badge exists so you can tell, at a glance, which listings on LegalCounselNearMe have completed our identity checks — and exactly what those checks do and don't mean.

The five checks behind every badge

A firm earns the Verified badge only after completing all five steps: email verification, phone verification, website verification, office address verification, and submission of bar or license information. Profiles that haven't completed the process display no badge — many listings in our directory are public records a firm hasn't claimed yet.

The badge also requires the firm to display the LegalCounselNearMe Verified badge linking back to their profile, which lets you confirm a badge you see elsewhere is genuine.

What verification does not mean

Verification confirms identity and licensing information supplied by the firm. It is not a ranking of skill, a guarantee of outcomes, an endorsement, or a lawyer referral. Two verified firms can differ enormously in experience with your specific problem — that judgment is still yours.

Always confirm a lawyer's standing directly with the bar association or law society in their jurisdiction; every regulator offers a free public lookup.

Why some listings have no badge

Our directory includes real, publicly-listed law firms as unclaimed profiles so you can find them by city and practice area. An unclaimed listing means the firm hasn't yet gone through our checks — not that anything is wrong. If you run one of these firms, claiming your listing starts the verification process and is free.

How to use the badge when choosing

Treat Verified as a trust floor, not a decision. Shortlist firms by city and practice area, prefer verified profiles where available, then evaluate the shortlist on experience, fees and communication — our guide to choosing a personal injury lawyer walks through the questions that apply to almost any practice area.

Frequently asked questions

Is verification the same as a lawyer referral?

No. LegalCounselNearMe is a directory and marketplace, not a referral service, and verification is not an endorsement. It confirms identity and licensing information the firm supplied.

Does a firm pay to be verified?

The Verified listing tier is free. Paid tiers (Featured, Market Leader, Enterprise) affect placement and profile features — never the verification standard itself, which is identical for everyone.

I found my firm listed but unclaimed. What do I do?

Claim it from your profile page or the For Law Firms page. Claiming is free and starts the five verification checks; once complete, your badge appears.
